I run at 2560 x 1600 in 24M colours in Arm 7500 emulation on VA RPC 
SA, and have been doing for 3 or so years without trouble. This takes 
~15MB VRAM.

Could it be that the respondents set-up is running out of ordinary 
memory, rather than video memory?
