Thank you David for your help. I have followed your set up for va.cfg 
and problem 2 above is now sorted on my Virtual RPC 1.7.0

With problem 3 I have checked in Security and Privacy that the firewall 
is set to accept incoming connections from VirtualRPC but I still get 
the window.
