My mistake, sorry. I missed that you were referring to the
original booklet PDF, not the supplements. It might have been
better to change the title of this thread. I bought the booklet
from 'Archive' to avoid the likely printing problems that you
have experienced.

It is possible to print 2-A5s to an A4 sheet (like the
supplements) from Adobe Reader X but you have to realise that
the page numbers on the printed pages (1 - 80 plus 2 blanks plus
2 unnumbered) are /entirely separate/ from the pages in the file
(1 - 42) and irrelevant for the printing process: ignore them.

In the Adobe printer dialogue tick 'page handling -> choose
paper source....'. Select all pages and then print the 42
pages as pairs. Unfortunately, real page 1 = front/back covers
and real page 2 onwards should have started with the manual's
page 1 on the left so that if you fold the sheets in half the
page numbers are on the outer side of the page.

This is the consequence of preparing the whole document in a
wordprocessor from which an appropriate form of direct printing
could have been selected, but once the pages have been put into
PDF form their imposition can not be further manipulated except
as units equal to the actual paper size being used.

As far as Adobe Reader is concerned, it is best to output single
print pages to the PDF and then do /all/ the page manipulation
in the Adobe dialogue. I have successfully printed duplex A5
manuals from a stream of A4 pages but it is tricky.
