Assuming you are running VRPC, then you don't put anything in the settings in VRPC - on mine the gateway field is blank. All the settings are in Windows. Does your Windows browser work? Incidentally in your situation I would have changed the new router to match the old one - it's usually a lot simpler. Your 'script' might work as it is, depending on how you wrote it. It's worth a try, surely. Things like full access to the WIndows API should be irrelevant if all you are doing is using INPUT to ask a question and PRINT and maybe VDU codes to create a simple display. There is nothing in that that is RO-specific, and nothing that would require arcane Windows knowledge. > No idea what Windows would require. All that script does is read characters from the keyboard and print strings of characters to the terminal. A BASIC system has to be able to do that. I would be astonished if the BB4W evaluation copy will not do it. I installed (on my Win 8.1 system) the trial copy of BB4W, pasted in your source code, made one small change - added a reminder that pressing "+" stops the program - and saved the program file. In the BB4W editor the modified code looks like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/br5ctihyq1kmyod/20181008%20BobAdler%20code.jpg?dl=0 - mind the long URL Within the editor if one clicks on the Run menu, then within that the Run menu entry, a window opens with the program running, and pressing / or * or + does what you'd expect. That looks like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tf6r2x35d9u4xha/20181008%20BobAdler%20run.jpg?dl=0 - mind the long URL If one double-clicks the BobAdler.bbc program in File Explorer, it opens in the code editor ready to be edited or run or whatever. I don't know enough about BB4W to know if one can make it skip the editor display and run immediately (and I'm not about to try to find out). In the full version of BB4W there's a way to generate a .exe file from a .bbc source, so that users can run the .exe directly - I don't know about the ins & outs of that either. Since this program is so simple, I was thinking about writing a version in VBS (a programming language that every Windows PC already has installed, as far as I know). But there's a problem with that which is that I don't know if VBS can read keyboard input a character at a time. I think it can only read lines at a time ie characters followed by a carriage return. Running an equivalent to the BASIC program where one has for example to type / then return then / then return etc is nothing like so 'smooth'. -- Jeremy Nicoll - my opinions are my own From styleguide at avisoft.f9.co.uk Tue Oct 9 00:03:08 2018 From: styleguide at avisoft.f9.co.uk (Martin) Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2018 00:03:08 +0100 Subject: [Virtualacorn-list] BBC Bascic to Windows In-Reply-To: References: <50280.91.85.218.30.1538841935.squirrel@email.orpheusnet.co.uk> Message-ID: <5743fdc377styleguide@avisoft.f9.co.uk> On 06 Oct in article , Jeremy Nicoll - ml VA via Virtualacorn-list wrote: > On 2018-10-06 17:05, Bob Ardler via Virtualacorn-list wrote: > > > > The problem is how to make the program work for teachers with MS > > (or Apple?) machines connected to their whiteboards. He has released BBC BASIC for SDL, which is totally free to use, AND there are versions which run on Windows, Linux (x86 CPU only), Mac OS-X, Raspberry Pi (Raspbian), Android and iOS. See http://www.bbcbasic.co.uk/bbcsdl/ If your programs do not use any Wimp SYS calls, or OS-specific calls it should run virtually unchanged on either BB4W or the SDL version. I had a program which I developed under RISC OS, and converted to BB4W as an experiment. It was run under RPCEmu on a Mac ... but when the SDL version became available I converted it to that (on Windows) and then moved it to the SDL Mac version (remotely using TeamViewer!). Can anyone with any registration pages bookmarked please change them to http://www.virtualacorn.co.uk/register I'm still developing the system (over 50 changes this month) and it's very likely that pages will move around, dependencies will change etc. The '/register' page will always be present but the links posted the other day are now invalid because of a change I've been intending to make for a few weeks. If the correct link is used all data input will be over https and the latest information on unlocking/using products on different versions of Windows will always be displayed. It makes my life (and at least 1 customer's) life easier if I don't have to spend ages sorting out problems that would never have happened if the unlock code request had been started on the right page. For example one of the links posted bypassed all the information about installing old versions of VirtualRPC on Windows 10. Thanks Aaron P.S. For anyone with an old copy of VirtualRPC with an e-mail address in their product registration window, try sending an e-mail to the address. The printer was set on an IP of 192.168.1.4 and now I cannot get into its network card to change it to the required 0 series to get it back on the network. Unfortunately it refuses to access the card because it is not a Kyocera one. Is there some sort of fiddle to get temporarily onto the 0 series network to get into the printer to change the card's IP ? The links to the new system and instructions will be sent back automatically. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus From mik.towse at xemik.com Thu Oct 25 17:58:17 2018 From: mik.towse at xemik.com (Mik Towse) Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2018 17:58:17 +0100 Subject: [Virtualacorn-list] Unlocking VirtualAcorn Products - update In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <574C9D921B%mik.towse@xemik.com> In article Aaron Timbrell via Virtualacorn-list wrote: > I've seen a couple of posts recently about unlocking VirtualAcorn > products along with some old links to various parts of the registration > system. > > Can anyone with any registration pages bookmarked please change them to > > http://www.virtualacorn.co.uk/register [snip] > It makes my life (and at least 1 customer's) life easier if I don't have > to spend ages sorting out problems that would never have happened if the > unlock code request had been started on the right page. It can produce compiled executables so that users don't need the development tools. It would mean re-writing the application but it would probably be quite easy if you have the BBC Basic source code. Your 'script' might work as it is, depending on how you wrote it. It's worth a try, surely. It can produce compiled executables so that users don't need the development tools. It would mean re-writing the application but it would probably be quite easy if you have the BBC Basic source code. Assuming you are running VRPC, then you don't put anything in the settings in VRPC - on mine the gateway field is blank. All the settings are in Windows. Does your Windows browser work? Incidentally in your situation I would have changed the new router to match the old one - it's usually a lot simpler. If I do need to access a CD, I use a Mount (E:\ here) in VRPC to access the underlying drive. VRPC Windows menubar Tools > Options and the HostFs Tab. Dave I'd also like to know just what that message means considering I have a number of CDFS related modules installed and active...? [Snip] Sorry: please ignore. I don't know what I diid, but it has sprung to like again, so I'm back to normal again - with the exception of the ancient Kyocera printer.... Funny you should say that: I have just done exactly that and everything is back to normal again. Stupidly, I did not realise that you could change the routers IP :o( Thanks anyway, John -- ____ /__ __________________________ /____Mail from mail at JohnWoodhouse.plus.com . . . using RISC OS From mike at greengenie.plus.com Sat Oct 6 20:21:24 2018 From: mike at greengenie.plus.com (Mike Hobbs) Date: Sat, 06 Oct 2018 19:21:24 -0000 Subject: [Virtualacorn-list] BBC Bascic to Windows In-Reply-To: <50280.91.85.218.30.1538841935.squirrel@email.orpheusnet.co.uk> References: <50280.91.85.218.30.1538841935.squirrel@email.orpheusnet.co.uk> Message-ID: There is a product called BBC Basic for Windows but I never found it very good and it cost about 30 quid. More recently I've found AutoIt3 to be much more capable on Windows. It is Basic-like but provides full access to the entire Windows API and is very well documented. It can produce compiled executables so that users don't need the development tools. It would mean re-writing the application but it would probably be quite easy if you have the BBC Basic source code. AutoIt3 is free and has a very comprehensive function library. The last thing I would do is to try using any Windows Basic. Why not search for AutoIt3 and try it (and the SciTE context-sensitive editor for writing source code). BUT you said earlier "...the simple RiscOS Basic script I wrote". Remember that BBC BASIC for Windows is /BBC BASIC/ albeit with extra facilities. Your 'script' might work as it is, depending on how you wrote it. It's worth a try, surely. Things like full access to the WIndows API should be irrelevant if all you are doing is using INPUT to ask a question and PRINT and maybe VDU codes to create a simple display. If your 'simple script' used windows, mice, menus, etc under RO then writing a WIndows equivalent will be a good deal harder, but personally I wouldn't call that a simple script. -- Jeremy Nicoll - my opinions are my own
