Hi Jolly Chums, Found that utility on the install CD & ran it. Doesn't need the password key. All is now restored. Many thanks to all. I'll do a better job of backups now (honest). It took a while to get A Round Tuiit as I have been taking advantage of the hot weather & doing some repairs to our ancient conservatory wood work. Dig out a bit, fill a bit, paint a bit. Then there's the ages you have to wait for things to set & dry. What fun. I had to replace some ancient hinges. The originals were packed out with pieces cut from a Wills Woodbine fag packet (anyone remember them). Chiselit, Bodgit & Leggit had obviously cut the holes too big. Modern hinges are slightly bigger than the originals & the screw holes don't line up. More filling & sanding. This is undoubtedly the problem, but the reset recreates a default setup. If, like me, you make extensive changes to those defaults, you should make a copy of the cmos.ram file once you're happy with the new settings. So if (when?) cmos.ram gets corrupted again, you won't have to make all those changes again. I have 'cmos-Copy.ram' in the same Folder as the 'real' cmos.ram and have to copy it back 4 or 5 times a year. We have many powercuts here and Windows has a habit of rebooting without warning occasionally. -- Mik Towse * mik.towse at xemik.com * http://www.xemik.co.uk/ My writers' site can be found at: http://www.lexis.org.uk xemik.net - cost effective web hosting : http://xemik.net Hot glass looks exactly the same as cold glass From cvjazz at waitrose.com Sat Jun 30 16:25:09 2018 From: cvjazz at waitrose.com (Chris Newman) Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2018 16:25:09 +0100 Subject: [Virtualacorn-list] Boot problem In-Reply-To: <20180628215623.C36B421D7A@outbound-queue-adx-1.mail.thdo.gradwell.net> References: <570f6dd94acvjazz@waitrose.com> <20180628215623.C36B421D7A@outbound-queue-adx-1.mail.thdo.gradwell.net> Message-ID: <5710543d34cvjazz@waitrose.com> In article <20180628215623.C36B421D7A at outbound-queue-adx-1.mail.thdo.gradwell.net>, Gavin Crawford via Virtualacorn-list wrote: > I've had the same thing happen on a number of occasions when my pc hasn't > shut down properly. Must say, tho, that I was surprised to discover the copy of CMOS in Choices, because in Configure the "CMOS > Save" menu gives no clue about *where* it gets saved.
