Well, here I am - thoroughly beaten. First thing yesterday
morning I set to with a will and screwed it up. So I
installed a fresh test copy with the ARM7500 model. I
prepared it for the 6.20 upgrade by installing the versions
of DrivePop and AccessSet which are 6.20-compatible.

I then ran the upgrade following Jim's advice (sent in a
personal e-mail) not to tick any of the upgrade components
apart from the boot sequence and the ROMs. To get out of
the RO6 installer, I clicked Restart and when it had
restarted I shut it down completely and started it again
from Windows. I re-initialised ZLib and DrawChart and left
RSTools unplugged, shut down and started it again. It came
up in a 256-colour, 640×480 screen. I couldn't successfully
double-click on !Boot - no result if I did - but adjust-
clicking on the cogwheel brought up the configuration
window.

In Display, the drop-down menus wouldn't play properly.
They either didn't respond or they responded in a transient
fashion - blink and you'd miss them.

I then had a small (but possibly dim) light go on over my
head. I made a fresh installation and copied it twice. I
set each one up for one of the three models.

I then upgraded them all to 6.20. I had complete (as far as
I could tell) success with ARM7 and StrongARM. I then
upgraded the ARM7500 version, using exactly the same
procedure as with the other two. The success was partial in
that it ran with 1920×1080 resolution but only 4 greys. The
menus were unavailable, as I reported before. Why the
change in resolution and colour depth, I don't know.

I am now at the stage where I have given up on the ARM7500
model as far as upgrading it to 6.20 is concerned. I can
live without the keyboard short cuts because Martin
Avison's QuickFiler can do for me just as well - indeed, it
used to before I upgraded to 6.20 several years ago.

The big bonus, apart from having the memory to run a
3840×1080 screen, is getting a scroll wheel which works.

If anyone is still interested in a detailed record of how I
carried out the upgrade(s), I'll transcribe my written
notes but I've got some catching up to do elsewhere so
it'll be another day before they appear.

Frustratedly yours,

John
