Aha! Problem solved. Thanks Mik, I should have looked for
myself in the first place.

I now have a working installation. RO 4.39 under the
ARM7500 model.

The only slight problem was a lack of smoothness in the
mouse pointer and its motion slightly lagged behind that of
the mouse pointer itself. However, just as with RO 6.20,
unplugging RSTools has done the trick. Tomorrow (or the day
after (or the day after that)), I shall reinstate all my
applications and files.
