Prior to actually using it for the first time this evening, I confess
my own impressions were severely pre-coloured by the wealth of
criticism of AVG Free 2013-14 on various forums, none of which seemed
to suggest any cogent reasons or solutions.

However - although it's very, very early days (based on only 4 hours
use), my gut feel now is that the criticism may be seriously
premature.

When I first fired it up, I really couldn't see much problem with the
performance (although IMHO the ergonomics of the control panel are
pretty crappy) - but then I realised it had already carried across all
my configuration settings from AVG Free 2012. Nice one.

But if I then reverted to what might be the default settings - WHAM
BAM - everything slowed to a slow crawl, just as Mike and other have
reported. So is it simply down to making 'suitable' configurations
settings - bearing in mind we've already harped on about this topic ad
nauseam with AVG Free 2012 and earlier in the VirtualRPC In Use
booklet?

For example, if doing a full scan with what may be the default
priority setting (for AVG) of Medium, then everything else is badly
compromised. It's even worse on the Fast setting; everything else
simply stops. But if you select the Basic setting, then everything
else becomes reasonably usable - but the scan takes longer. And if you
select Dynamic (whatever that means), then the rest of the computer is
unaffected - but full scans will take for ever.

So as you can change priority on the fly, and just as easily Pause
scans etc if you're doing something really important, then my
*initial* response is that using AVG Free 2014 - in practice - may be
quite similar to using AVG Free 2012.

There's still a lot of options to work through and assess but, at this
early stage, I suspect we may have a goer. Give me a few more days and
I'll report back in more detail. HTH.
