Hello Folks

If you happen to have dipped into the bumper bonus birthday issue of
'VirtualRPC in Use' on the VirtualAcorn website at
http://www.virtualacorn.co.uk/support/vrpcinuse/index.htm[,
commemorating the 10th anniversary of VirtualRPC on 6 Sep 2013, you
may well be confused by the notes on AVG Free on pp49-50.

Unfortunately, Sod's Law had a field day. To recap, AVG Free 2013 has
taken some flak in PC forums and one suggestion was to revert to using
AVG Free 2012, in the knowledge that the frequent anti-malware
signature file updates are still entirely valid. The final issue of
AVG Free 2012 (2012.0.2197) is available for download via the
FileHippo.com website at
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus_32/ (or _64 for 64-bit
users).

The article was submitted on 1 Sep but a new issue of the AVG Free
programme was released only 5 days later, pushing the final 2012 issue
off the end of the FileHippo listing (as predicted). Furthermore, the
new issue turned out to be AVG Free 2014... A tad premature?

We've been assessing AVG Free 2014 and it appears to have not only the
same problems reported with v2013, but also a couple of extra
limitations. So on that basis we still suggest you go back to using
the 2012 programme.

If you've already recently updated to AVG Free 2014, in this instance
you may find that you can't use System Restore to revert back to AVG
Free 2012; it won't let you. But you can still download v2012.0.2197
from FileHippo.com (click on View More), uninstall the 2014 programme,
install AVG 2012, update the signature files on at least a daily basis
and that will keep you safe. Honest.

HTH, any queries to admin at toms12.plus.com please. Regards to all
