I have tried a couple of compatibility modes since I wrote my previous
message but that doesn't provide a solution. A Google search on
"Windows 8 doesn't really switch off UAC with the slider" will help
understand why, although there is a red herring offered suggesting a
regestry change as a fix... Not for VA I fear.
I now have VA (no compatabilty settings nor even the need to turn UAC
off [1]) running under Windows 8 after discovering the strange blocky
UI can be persuaded to have a link to VA and that right clicking on
that link provides a menu containing "Run as Administrator" [2] which
works, it's all there with no complaints except that UniPrint is still
not talking to Windows UniServer.
[1] I have UAC turned off to avoid nags from Windows, but this appears
not to be necessary, and I have made no registry changes.
[2] "Run as Administrator" doesn't work from the filer window - this
just tells me that my copy of VA is unregistered.
