I think you've overlooked the collateral benefit of Roger's
(and anyone else's) immediate recourse to a familiar source
of information. Almost certainly there are people who lurk
on this list or who simply haven't responded to the thread
who weren't previously aware of these file types and how to
deal with them.

If Roger had just gone off and done an internet search,
those poor benighted souls would still be languishing in
ignorance. Now, they know there's a light switch in a room
they might not have known existed. If and when they stumble
into this room, they'll know what to do.

This is to ignore the possibility of thread drift which
might take us all to another room stuffed with unimaginable
riches.
