docx and xlsx files are the new format for Word and Excel files and 
have been made a new "open" standard so Open Office can open them etc 
as well as Office. In effect they are apparently documents in a 
compressed file.

If your VA system had not seen any application that could open these 
type of files and Unicontrol was setup to transfer these files to be 
viewed on the PC side (probably the default). Then it will offer them 
to the PC side for Office/Open Office or similar to open them.
