I used to get something similar to this when the Windows-side anti-virus kicked 
in with a warning. It hasn't happened to me recently (I ditched that particular 
anti-virus), but I believe I managed to return control to Windows by pressing 
Alt-Tab. Maybe that would work for Roger and others.
