[Bru-list] advice sought on setting up 'wiped' hard drive for Lubuntu

Steve, the keys to access the BIOS depend on the manufacturer, some use 
F2 and not delete like the others.

F12 is normally for selecting which drive to boot from, but again may be 
different. I would find out the model of the laptop and check with the 
manufacturer website to see how to force a boot from USB.

Also some of the newer laptops have the UEFI boot, which can be a real 
pain if it's partition was wiped from the HDD. I would think the laptop 
manufacturer will provide a recovery disc on their website for this case.

Once you've booted into Lubuntu, you can install it to the HDD from 
there if you wish, there's an icon on the desktop for it.

I highly recommend getting a copy of Hiren's 10.6 and a cheap external 
USB CD/DVD drive for if you find a machine in a pickle like this again. 
It's got all kind of tools for scrubbing and reformatting drives. If you 
can't find it, I can bring a copy next meeting.
